Gratitude

Some people receive prophecies from prophets, some hear audible voices from above, some dream dreams, some receive visions, some flip open the bible and out comes a passage that speaks to them directly.

And me?

I just KNOW that certain things are meant to be, that they are meant to happen regardless how absurd it might seem/sound at the first place. I'm not psychic or a fortune-teller, but certain things that have happened lately do surprise me.

Those that know me well enough would know that the flat hunt for next year went on for quite a while. It was the terms test period then, I was down with a cold, and the landlords/tenants gave us different answers each time we asked them for more information or whether the flats were taken or not. Then when we almost decided with a flat, there came the worry that we won't be able to find 2 more people and would need to end up paying for extra rents. Or worrying about the distance of the new flat or even how the stairs would be frosty and slippery during the winter.

Despite all the uncertainties that surrounded me, I just knew that I shouldn't worry, and that I didn't need to. He made those plans, He planned for Citicol to rent over The Lofts, He planned for the Pancakes to becomes RAs next year, He planned for that flat to be ours even before we decided to view it. And that's how I know we need not worry about not having 2 more flatmates, or even whether we'll fall down the stairs and break a leg or something terrible.

Also, I've been getting this word planted inside my head for a few days now.

Gratitude.

The song "Gratitude" by Nichole Nordeman was used as the opening song in the movie clip made for my birthday, and it wasn't by random chance it was chosen. Just watched a Korean movie minutes ago, and the words that stuck out the most the whole time despite it being a cheesy love story was "Deo Gratias" (latino, meaning giving thanks to God for grace received).

Send some rain, would You send some rain?
'Cause the earth is dry and needs to drink again
And the sun is high and we are sinking in the shade
Would You send a cloud, thunder long and loud?
Let the sky grow black and send some mercy down
Surely You can see that we are thirsty and afraid
But maybe not, not today
Maybe You'll provide in other ways
And if that's the case...

We'll give thanks to You with gratitude
For lessons learned in how to thirst for You
How to bless the very sun that warms our face
If You never send us rain

Daily bread, give us daily bread
Bless our bodies, keep our children fed
Fill our cups, then fill them up again tonight
Wrap us up and warm us through
Tucked away beneath our sturdy roofs
Let us slumber safe from danger's view this time
Or maybe not, not today
Maybe You'll provide in other ways
And if that's the case...

We'll give thanks to You with gratitude
A lesson learned to hunger after You
That a starry sky offers a better view
If no roof is overhead
And if we never taste that bread

Oh, the differences that often are between
Everything we want and what we really need

So grant us peace, Jesus, grant us peace
Move our hearts to hear a single beat
Between alibis and enemies tonight
Or maybe not, not today
Peace might be another world away
And if that's the case...

We'll give thanks to You with gratitude
For lessons learned in how to trust in You
That we are blessd beyond what we could ever dream
In abundance or in need
And if You never grant us peace...

But, Jesus, would You please...

So often we only give thanks for what we already have (and ask for what we don't). Who doesn't? Perhaps what I need to do right now is to show gratitude, even for things that hasn't come to pass yet, so that when it really happens in the future, how much more would it/someone be appreciated?

So here it is, a list in no particular order, my "gratitude list":

I'm giving thanks
  • for being able to make melodies out of a set of 88 black & white keys.
  • for having friends I couldn't bear the thought of not living without (you know who you are)
  • for the past (sometimes bitter) experiences that made me who I am now.
  • for the opportunity to study here.
  • for good food =)
  • for music and the ability to appreciate them.
  • for the sun today.
  • for the joyous feeling of handing in my assignment hours ago.
  • for laughter in my life.
  • for beautiful flowers during spring.
  • for lighthouse to grow from around 6 people in Arana hall last year to a mini church now
  • for love stories that make me go "awwwww..."
  • for the excitement anticipation brings :P

All in all, for being given what I need and so much mre than I could over hope for.
